Due to an ankle injury, all-around player Hardik Pandya was left off of the World Cup team. According to a report published on Saturday, Pandya may decide to leave the Gujarat Titans (GT) and rejoin the Mumbai Indians for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL).
According to ESPNcricinfo, the Mukesh Ambani-owned team is reportedly paying Gujarat Titans an undisclosed transfer fee in addition to the all-rounder’s salary in an all-cash deal worth a whooping Rs 15 crore. Pandya is expected to receive 50% of the transfer money.
Should the agreement come to pass, it will be the largest player trade in IPL history. Neither franchise has officially announced it as of yet.
Having begun his IPL career with the Mumbai Indians, Pandya guided the Gujarat-based team to the title in the 2022 IPL season.
He was also named ‘Player of the Match’ in the match that concluded against the Rajasthan Royals.
Pandya signed a one-year contract worth just Rs 10 lakh with the Mumbai Indians for the 2015 IPL season.
Pandya has participated in 123 games, taking 53 wickets and amassing 2,309 runs at a strike average of 139.89.
Gujarat Titans advanced to the IPL final in 2023 for the second consecutive season, but they were defeated by Chennai Super Kings. Under Hardik’s direction, the Titans had won the league championship both seasons.
Pandya amassed 833 runs in 30 innings during his two seasons with the Gujarat Titans, averaging 41.65 and striking at 133.49. For them, he claimed 11 wickets at an economy rate of 8.1.
Who’s next in line?
The Gujarat Titans are searching for a new captain in light of Pandya’s departure. Shubman Gill, the opener for India, and Kane Williamson, the seasoned captain of New Zealand, are probably going to compete to be the team’s captain in 2024.
Gill has so far had an incredible IPL season. After amassing 890 runs in 17 games during the previous season, he was awarded the IPL 2023 Orange Cap.
With three centuries in his final five games of the season, he had an incredible run of form towards the end of the tournament. He is just the third batter in IPL history to score more than 800 runs in a single season.
Williamson, the captain of New Zealand, is a superb batsman and one of the most successful captains in international cricket, aside from Gill.
In both the 2019 World Cup and the 2021 World Test Championship, he guided New Zealand to the championship game. After making it to the semifinals of the ICC World Cup 2023, India defeated New Zealand.
