Review: Dungeons 4: The Preferred Game of the Adjectived Evil

According to the most horrifyingly wicked, Dungeons 4 is the finest game in the series thus far.

Dungeons 4’s narrative continues where Dungeons 3 left off. The planet was entirely under the control of the Abhorred Evil. Okay. About that.

It seems that the Detested Evil’s vision of the total destruction of all good things was not realised. There was still one township full of goodie-two-shoe heroes.

And that was a major eyesore for the horrible Evil, my darling animals of the night. To finally annihilate good, the Ever Scheeming Evil dispatched Thalya, its supreme general.

They were unaware, though, that the hero causing them all that difficulty was actually Tristan, Thalya’s own stepbrother. The last of the heroes, but not the greatest.

An enormous conflict broke out as a result. A contest that had never been witnessed by the world before. Mountains split. The sea split. On Wall Street, leprechauns began exchanging their pots of gold for stocks.

Not at all. After giving Tristan a swift asshole kick, I carried on with my day. I had no idea, though, that it wouldn’t be the last time I saw that unhappy runt.

Actually, I had been pursuing Tristan for the most of Dungeons 4. The right term would be hunting since the coward wouldn’t quit fleeing or repeating his long, drawn-out rant.

Well, at least my temper was somewhat calmed by the massacre of defenceless onlookers. Before it grows boring, you can only torment so many Snotlings.

The game doesn’t seem to take itself seriously.The game Dungeons 4 doesn’t really take itself too seriously. It consistently violates the fourth wall, makes allusions to popular culture, and even includes a few easter eggs from other games.

Consider the Totaly-Not-Infinity Gauntled in the picture above. By “accidentally” using it, Tahlya is able to extinguish the Revengeful Evil. You are aware. entirely by mistake.

The game is full with jokes, shade, slander, and other ridiculous remarks. That’s usually a warning sign in games, in my opinion.

Based on my observations, games typically utilise humour to cover up their flaws. And I’m glad that Dungeons 4 doesn’t operate that way. Despite its playful nature, the game boasts a well designed core experience.

Furthermore, the humour is outdated, which is something that a lot of games do incorrectly. You may question what I mean when I say this. Use Borderlands as an illustration.

Even while I like the Borderlands games immensely, playing them right now makes me shudder. Even if the humour in the games was a product of its era, it was entertaining at the time. In 2023, no.

Because Dungeons 4 is just cynical enough to make everyone giggle, it manages to pull off its humour. It makes allusions to well-loved culture and plays on classic stereotypes.

Even though the humour might not be to everyone’s taste, I laughed a little bit at least. You can at least play the game as a drinking game, if nothing else. Every time you see a reference, give it a try.

The gameplay combines RTS and Dungeon Defence.

Combining genres is always difficult since you never know what will result. Either you’ll get an incredible experience with engaging gameplay, or you’ll get a completely broken mess that is excruciating to go through.

Fortunately, Dungeons 4 is the previous one. It strikes a nice mix between RTS and Dungeon Defender, not leaning too much towards either.

You have complete control over how your dungeon is outfitted and constructed throughout the Dungeon Defender segment of the game.

You therefore own every essential element of Dungeon Defenders. mining, construction, defence, resource management, research, laying traps, and so forth.

You eventually get to witness the results of your sinister toil during the RTS section of the game. Release swarms of minions upon your adversaries, destroy their camps, massacre innocent bystanders, mistune all of their guitars, stuff raisins into their cookies, and engage in any other actions appropriate for a cunning and cunning being like yourself.

There Are Many Mechanics in Dungeons 4

Despite having a large number of mechanics, Dungeons 4 doesn’t feel overly comprehensive. particularly if you start with the campaign and work your way through it before playing Skirmishes.

The various troops and their upgrading pathways are the first things you are introduced to. To put it briefly, you have the upgrading paths for your dungeon, horde, demonic, and undead.

You may enhance your dungeon’s chambers and Snotlings by using the dungeon upgrading path.

Horde units are excellent all-arounders with a wide range of applications. Demons respawn at altars and are excellent at rebuffing and dealing fire damage to enemies. Dead are essentially more in number than in quality. Excellent for crushing your opponents.

Due to its ability to significantly change the game’s trajectory, magic is also quite significant.

But you have to locate and extract some Mana stores before you may utilise magic. To access the chambers of the Demon tree, you must also devote a few levels to it. You won’t be able to employ magic till then.

With its help, you can generate resources out of thin air. This lets you defend your units and deal damage and debuffs to your opponents.

Alternatively, and this is my personal favourite, call a Demon lord that will roll over and curb-stomp each adversary it comes across.
